Chapter Twelve

How long had it been since Kral stood before the Arrow’s only hatch that had an actual ramp, watching it descend toward the floor of this very Coalition vessel?

His thoughts wandered back to that monumental event. He and his prism had come seeking retribution, and then he had met Buddy and heard his sisters speak and sing. Kral had heard Becca.

The harmony in their voices stirred something so strong within him that he couldn’t ignore it. He didn’t want to. Not when Becca’s voice had affected him so intensely while she spoke.

He had analyzed their song, lifted out different elements, and discovered Becca’s voice within the strains. A voice that had made him feel at once complete and utterly empty when the melody stopped.

Now, she was standing at his side. Even with his doubts, he felt stronger than he ever had before. He looked over to her and took in her nervous expression. He thought he could almost feel her anxiousness, though they hadn’t bonded.

Yet.

Reaching over, he took her hand in his and gently squeezed it. She smiled at him and nodded. He released her hand, then turned toward the hatch.

They walked down the ramp together, following Bron, Dorn, and Lar. The warriors had taken up protective stances around Becca, blocking her from view.

The commander of the Reckoning awaited them, along with several other Sadirians that Kral didn’t recognize. And one that he did.

Vay stood ramrod straight, a deep frown on her face, her brow furrowed, and the rims of her eyes red and swollen. Kral’s hearts seized briefly.

He stepped forward and angled his head toward the commander.

“Marq,” Kral said.

“Kral.” Marq stood motionless, his expression vaguely troubled. “Whatever it is that you need, I hope we can assist. However…”

He glanced over at Vay. “Perhaps in the future, you can let us know before you leave Harbor. The town was created for other sentients to visit Earth and learn of their ways, but the Department of Homeworld Security is adamant that we not give away our presence to other Earthlings yet.”

“We are aware of their desire,” Kral said. “And have kept our vessel cloaked while traveling.”

“Did you also keep it cloaked while hovering over Becca’s house for fifteen minutes earlier tonight?” Vay said, her tone clipped and her eyes shimmering.

Kral turned to Bron, who simply shrugged.

“Do you have any idea what a mess it caused to have her neighbors notice a giant crystal floating above their houses?” Vay nearly shouted.

“We kept the lights off,” Bron said. “They couldn’t have seen more than a shadow.”

“A shadow that half a dozen people filmed and uploaded to the internet,” she said. “Our teams have been working for hours tracking everything down and trying to spin it so that humans don’t get any more evidence that aliens exist. They saw the hatch open.”

That wasn’t good. Still, their reaction to the situation irked Kral.

“The Coalition has entire teams dedicated to keeping low-tech planets from gathering evidence of alien existence,” he said. “Surely it wasn’t too much trouble.
