folding screen mountain retreat

DESIGNER KIM CHOON

Narrow paths weaving through a patchwork of brilliant green rice paddies and a winding dirt road lead to the tiny rural village of Andong located 250 kilometers from Seoul. Struck by the beauty of the landscape and the rich cultural heritage of the Andong area, interior designer Kim Choon decided to build a second home here to share with his creative director wife, pet dog, and visiting friends. The house faces magical views of Byeong Mountain and Nakdong River, with its pristine white beach, a propitious geographic site known as myeongdang according to Korean geomancy. Appropriately named “Folding Screen Mountain,” the rock cliff has a vertical drop reminiscent of a traditional brush-and-ink painted screen displaying an ever-changing view of the seasons. The tiny village is revered as one of the most scenic spots in Korea as well as being the site of Byeongsan Seowon, a Confucian school built in 1613 (see page 204). Often referred to as the spiritual capital of Korea, the Andong area is known for its cultural development since the Silla Dynasty (57–935 BC) and as home to many yangban families, the aristocratic literati-scholars of the Joseon Dynasty (AD 1392–1910). The traditional houses, Confucian schools, temples, and pagodas preserved in the area testify to its flourishing architectural and literary heritage.
