“What are you doing this week?” Kim asked Emily.

“Still banging away at the amino acid project, helping the rest of the Hive when I can. I think I’m this close to turning lead into gold.” She held her thumb and forefinger a fraction of an inch apart.

“Well, if you can set aside the alchemy for a bit, I want you to come to New York City with me.”

“Are we eloping? I’ll pack a bag.”

“Just as soon as I tell my husband,” Kim said. “Or instead of that, we could meet with a company who wants us to buy their patent for an epilepsy treatment. Since you’re our patron saint of benzodiazepines, I would appreciate your input.”

“Hear that, peeps?” Emily called to the others. “Patron saint. I expect shrines when I return.”

“Only if we can have a finger bone or two for the reliquaries,” Scott said.

“That’s fair. Tam, go borrow the paper cutter from HR.”

“I’ll pick you up early tomorrow morning and we’ll head to the airport. Back the day after,” Kim said. “Six o’clock?”

“I’ll be waiting with my Yankees cap on.”

“You do and you’ll be fired. We’re a Mets household.”

“I’ll be waiting with my ‘Yankees Suck’ cap on.”

“Atta girl.”

One flight and one taxi ride later, the ladies dropped their luggage off at the hotel and walked the two blocks to the meeting. Emily insisted on getting a bagel from a deli on the way.

During the meeting, Emily asked some pertinent questions, and on hearing the answers, suggested to Kim that the St. Louis facility might be best for production. This was a prearranged code that she was skeptical, because there was no facility in St. Louis. Hands were shaken, follow-up calls were scheduled, and polite social bullshit was politely bullshitted. Emily escaped that last bit to snag a pretzel from a cart outside the building while she waited for Kim.

“I think there’s a reason they never put it into production,” Emily said as the two ladies walked back to the hotel. “I just couldn’t see how that base was stable.”

“I couldn’t, either,” Kim said, “but I was glad to get a second opinion.”

“Oooh! Pizza! Let’s get a slice.”

“How do you stay so thin?”

“I make amphetamines in my bathtub.”

“If you’re not going to share them, you go ahead. I’ll save my calorie spree for something decadently chocolate after dinner.”

“That was enough food even for me,” Emily said as they walked back into their room. “I’m going to sit in that chair and metabolize for three days.”

“You’ll have to pay for the next two nights yourself.”

“I can do it on the plane.”

“I’m going to run over to that tacky little souvenir shop just up the block,” Kim said. “If I don’t come back with trinkets and t-shirts, the hubby and kids will disown me.”

Emily looked up from rooting around in her bag for the book she’d brought. “Kids? When did you get kids?”

Kim laughed. “Well if I remember their birthdays correctly, about sixteen years ago and fourteen years ago.”

“You’ve just never mentioned them before.
