Gary Feldman and I head back out to the 287, but a few minutes after we leave the Crawford Hill parking lot, driving past some fields and forests, I look out the window and have a brief out-of-body experience. “Gary! Stop the car!”

Off to the right is the husk of Holmdel Bell Labs—the legendarily defunct Holmdel Bell Labs. I hadn’t realized it was so close and hadn’t had time to schedule a visit. What, you may ask, is the Holmdel Bell Labs? I now briefly hand the microphone over to Wikipedia:

The Bell Labs Holmdel Complex functioned for forty-four years as a research and development facility, initially for the Bell System. The centerpiece of the 472-acre campus is an Eero Saarinen designed structure that served as the home to over 6,000 engineers and researchers. This modernist building, dubbed “The Biggest Mirror Ever” by Architectural Forum, due to its mirror box exterior, was the site of at least one Nobel Prize discovery, the laser cooling work of Steven Chu … Internally, the building is divided into four pavilions of labs and offices, each around an atrium. The internal pavilions are linked via sky-bridges and perimeter walkway … In 2006, Alcatel-Lucent sold the facility to Preferred Real Estate Investments in the process of restructuring the company’s research efforts.
