CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Wishes

Eala

She wondered whether he did it out of a misguided sense of duty or some other weird masochist reason she couldn’t fathom. Each sporadic visit to his brother was obviously pure torture for Cathal, and yet, she knew he’d go back. Once he had realized Cathal was unwilling to help him escape, Odhran took special pains to make each visit unforgettable.

“Don’t let him frazzle you, Cathal,” Eala told him as they walked into the cell room. He no longer asked her to leave; her presence seemed to be comforting to him, a backup of sorts even if only in spirit. His brother was an expert at emotional blackmail. After talking to him, Cathal couldn’t do much more than crash into bed and, by the looks of him in the morning, toss and turn all night. Odhran’s gift to find and push his brother’s every button would have been admirable if it wasn’t wicked.

Odhran was lying on the floor, hands behind his neck, legs crossed at the ankles. Without bothering to spare them a glance, he said, “If it’s not my beloved brother and his bitch.”

Cathal’s face turned instantly scarlet, but he managed to keep his voice calm and leveled. “I told you before not to address Her Majesty that way.”

His brother did turn his face in their direction then. “Or what? She’ll kill me?” He barked a laugh. “She’ll kill me anyway, so what difference does it make?” Could he not even contemplate that it was possible to be shown mercy? Of course, he couldn’t, for he had no heart. How could the same mother have birthed two boys so utterly different? One a beautiful soul and the other a creature of darkness. “What do you want? Came to gloat about your freedom?”

Cathal would never do such a thing, but he didn’t say it. “Just came to check on you and make sure you’re okay.”

Odhran sprang to a sitting position and laughed. “You’re hilarious, my brother. Okay? Oh yes, I’m fabulous. I’m stuck in a prison cell, surrounded by idiots who want me dead. What could be better?”

“They haven’t killed you yet, Odhran,” Cathal said, stepping forward. “You should be grateful.”

In one fluid movement that belied his short legs, Cathal’s brother got on his feet and bowed. “I am eternally grateful to you and your bitch,” he said, voice low and threatening. Anticipating his reaction, Eala stepped closer and held on to Cathal’s hand. It didn’t go unnoticed. “You’re fucking her! What do you know, the goody-two-shoes has a wild side.”

Eala held on tighter. “Don’t take the bait,” she whispered, gluing her body to Cathal’s back. “He wants you to lose control.”

A disturbing smile stretched on Odhran’s lips. “How is it? To fuck a queen, I mean.” He chortled. “Oh wait, you have nothing to compare it with other than your own hand, right brother? Poor lonely boy could never find a hole for his peg.”

Cathal pulled hard on her hand. “Let me beat the shit out of him, please,” he grunted.
