Chapter Six

ORNATELY CARVED AND CAST in bronze, the coat tree was comprised of three naked, full-breasted female figures from the waist up. Back to back, each held out an arm, bent at wrist and elbow, to accept coats. Hats could be perched on their left hands, which were held in artful poses.

One woman had an eye closed in a lascivious wink. Another had her head cocked flirtatiously to one side, the tip of her tongue rested on her upper lip. The third, Kat saw when she lifted Rand’s jacket down for a full view, had a sweet, angelic smile on her face. The middle finger of her right hand, though, was raised in a gesture so crude and so unmistakable, she was glad he’d covered it with his coat.

The thing was hideous. It was totally tacky. And she was sure, the kind of thing that would appeal to men. She was tempted to bring Todd down when he came and show it to him, just to test her theory.

What a topic for a consumer survey: Would you buy an item like this? Would you want one as a gift? Would you give one as a gift? To whom would you give it? Why?

That was certainly a good question. Why? Why did Rand have it? And where in the world had he bought it? In some cheap secondhand store? Quickly, she hung his jacket back where she’d found it and opened the door. Then, turning back, she lifted his jacket and replaced it on the hand of the woman with the winking eye.

After giving the entire heavy coat tree a quarter turn to the right, she left, still laughing, and went back upstairs to finish her baking.

Kat and Todd were playing a quiet game of Scrabble, with classical music playing softly on the stereo, when she heard the back door open and two sets of footsteps descend the basement stairs. “More coffee?” she asked, getting to her feet.

On her way to the kitchen she cranked up the volume of the music a notch and a half. It covered whatever sounds might have come from downstairs. She left it on even when Todd took his leave. Before she went to bed, she switched on the remote speakers that would flood her room with sound and never heard the back door open. If it ever did.

“Hi, there.”

Kat looked up from her weeding, shading her eyes with a grubby hand as Rand loomed over her. “Hello,” she said, keeping her voice cool to hide the sudden heat that surged through her.

He had no right to go around in disreputably tight cutoffs, bare feet, and no shirt. His rumpled hair looked as if he’d just gotten out of bed. So did his eyes, all sleepy and half-shuttered, glittering darkly between his lashes. He squinted against the bright light.

He hadn’t shaved and looked like a reprobate. Somehow, that seemed sinful at nearly two-thirty on an afternoon.

It was also sinful the way her body responded to that kind of reminder of the past.
