Chapter Eighteen
I’ve barely made my way into this mine and I’m already impressed by what I see. While the entrance itself was nothing more than a tunnel carved into the rock, the walls sparkle with gems, gold, and platinum nodes. These aren’t things you can just grab, as if you’re plucking an apple from a tree—you have to play the tedious mining mini-game—but it’s definitely somewhere Stoneburner will be interested in.
I find myself wondering how he’s doing. He hasn’t logged back in yet and I’m really hoping that once he does and sees the potential our guild has, maybe he’ll stick around. But that’s for later. Right now, I need to focus on staying alive and playing smart.
I haven’t seen any mobs yet, but it doesn’t mean there won’t be some waiting around a corner, ready to skewer me back into a scrub level 1 weakling once again. They’ll be strong enough to do it, too. The bandit guards stationed outside were level 29. The ones inside are probably no higher than 35, but I could be wrong. And regardless, get cornered or get careless and that’s enough to do you in. There’s a reason so many casual players don’t opt for the adventuring side of this game and instead choose a more relaxed profession to earn money. This is dangerous work and the consequences for failure are way more severe.
A loud snort and spit stops me dead in my tracks. The noise echoes across carved mineshafts, lingering for a few seconds. Obviously there’s some kind of creature ahead, but that’s not a sound I recognize. I keep a low profile, creeping along and trying not to be distracted by the glittering veins of precious metal. Makes me wonder why someone hasn’t already set up shop here and farmed the hell out of this place.
The mineshaft opens to a large cavern and the grandeur of it all makes me realize that this is an abandoned dwarven mine. Only they would take the time to carve intricate script and runes into stone support columns. Most of my surroundings is just carved mountain, but there are some rotting wooden support beams spanning the entirety of the cavernous ceiling. Almost like a great hall. A few of the beams hang from their fasteners, promising a swift death for anyone standing beneath them should they finally break away and fall to the smooth, dusty stone floor. In the corners of the hall are old mine carts, piled together like a sloppy shopping cart return in a grocery store parking lot. Lots of ropes and pulleys. Cobwebbed pickaxes line up against a wall as if waiting years for the next shift to arrive and put them back to work.
It’s tempting to just dart across this hall, but I feel like it was the epicenter of the noise I heard earlier. So I wait. And right when I’m about to cautiously sneak forward, I detect motion behind one of the large support pillars. A massive elbow pops out followed by a giant’s hand holding a wooden club loaded with sharp pieces of granite.
