Chapter 51
Kingsmen: Monsters
Near Cloud Six
The Kingsmen sat in a cruiser, flying in and out of traffic, tossing up trash as they rushed through alleyways, and sped toward the south end of Cloud One. Ramir was full of questions, as usual.
"You've heard of GenMod or Mini-Mutation?" Jack asked Ramir.
Ramir shook his head.
Francis bounced his knee up and down. "Developed by the Exchange, before we bought 'em out." He drifted his gaze back out the window, biting his lower lip.
"And promptly shut their asses down." Jack affirmed. " Do-it-yourself splicing, safe for the whole family!" He spat.
Francis smiled and returned to the conversation. His knee stopped shaking for the moment. "'Look on the outside how you feel on the inside'," Francis mocked. "What was the other one?"
"'Don't Let Birth Determine Your Destiny'," Jack laughed, "or some shit. When they realized, towards the end, it was just try-hards and trash buying the things, they pandered: 'Unleash the Monster Within.'" Jack howled.
"Glad Kingmaker stepped in shortly after that," Francis said. "Even if it was before Johnny and I took over."
Ramir scratched his head. "So," he asked, "we're going to meet monsters?"
"Worse," said Jack. "People who think they are monsters."
The car dived suddenly into a valley, and abruptly stopped.
"This is our entrance," Francis said, and sprung to his feet. The car door opened and ascended and he hopped out, galloping toward the grated archway.
Ramir stepped out and his foot sunk, sludge devouring his ankle. He yanked it out, gagged, and took another step â his foot was swallowed by the swamp again.
Jack snickered. He leaned down from the hovering car and pulled Ramir up from under his shoulders and hoisted him back inside. "It works better if you run across it when it's really thick. Watch."
Jack lunged from the vehicle and bounced across the muck on the balls of his feet, heels never touching the ground.
Ramir grunted, then nodded. He readied himself, one hand each on the edge of the doorframe, revving his body back and forth. He scrambled a few steps and pushed off the car, flinging his body like a slingshot. He hurled toward the pond and landed nimbly on the balls of his feet.
So impressed with the landing, he forgot to keep running. Quickly remembering, he panicked, his ankles caught by the slime. His knees buckled and were buried in the sludge, followed promptly by his face.
Jack doubled over in laughter.
Francis growled, unamused. "Get the hell up," he shouted.
Ramir scrambled: his face and hands were gummed into the pond, tugging him back in. Finally he made a gun with fingers and blasted the stretched muck with hot bursts, then sprang across the pond as fast as he could. He tumbled, rolling onto the concrete floor at Francis' feet.
Francis grabbed Ramir by the collar heaved him up. He brought his nose close to the Shadow's. "We do not have time for bumbling incompetence," Francis barked. He placed Ramir's feet on the ground, shoving him as he released his grip.
Ramir regained his balance. He stared at Francis with a newfound fear.
