~Mikhail~

Nothing like watching the destruction of a planet to set the mood. Mikhail leaned close to Emma, who stared, riveted by what unfolded on the screen. Her fingers were still curved around the straps of the harness, a safety measure they’d only barely managed.

When the ship began to move away from the world about to explode, Emma and Mikhail found themselves only a few corridors away from the hangar. Rafe, his delightful brother, felt an urge to run and take charge. The chosen one being so responsible to his people. It made him gag. Mikhail felt no burning need to save the masses. Nor did he technically have any duties to attend, other than bothering Emma, which he proceeded to do after he pulled down emergency seating from the wall and buckled her in. His fingers might have strayed, but her fright kept her from slapping him. She didn’t react at all to his less-than-subtle groping. Rather disappointing. She was making the moment all about her.

“I blew up a planet.” Emma had said this a few times already. She still sounded shocked.

“Don’t take all the glory. I helped, too.” Mikhail finally got her attention.

Her gaze strayed from the screen to him. “This isn’t funny.”

“Never said it was. It’s actually stupidly heroic.”

“How do you figure that? We. Blew. Up. A. Planet. As in destroyed it. Killed all those, um, things on it.”

“Yes, we did, and if you ask me, we nailed our job because it looks like causing the planet to self-destruct was supposed to happen.” He pointed at the screen. “See that black hole? I do believe that’s the third marker. I can’t wait to see what’s on the other side.”

“Aren’t you the slightest bit hesitant to do that?”

“Not really.”

She arched a brow. “I’m beginning to think insanity is a gypsy trait. You can’t just jump into a brand new black hole. You don’t even know where it goes. For all we know, it ends up in some galactic toilet, and we drown in poop.”

“You should not fear death.” Most times, Mikhail didn’t. “According to most religions, there is some sort of afterlife. Even your kind believes in Heaven.”

“I’m not interested in an afterlife. I’d like to enjoy this life. Here and now. I know you’re all in a rush to find the promised land, but we should also be smart.”

“Smart?” He made a face. Talk about ruining all the fun. “You’re going to want to send some sort of unmanned scout into the hole, aren’t you?”

“It’s the responsible thing to do. Taking the whole fleet into that black hole would be dumb and reckless. It just formed. It needs to be tested.”

“You’re right. It does. And yet…” He eyeballed the screen showing their status. “I think Rafe plans to be the one to test it.”

“Don’t tell me that,” she growled. “Even he can’t be that stupid.”

“So you want me to lie?” Because anyone could see where they were headed. Mikhail didn’t fear, though. Adrenaline coursed through his veins.

Sitting beside him, Emma began to pant rapidly.
