Commander Daiyu was entirely focused on the interface in front of her, puzzling through the rough translations provided by Doctor Palinâs database. She had quickly found that, while generally accurate, sometimes the doctorâs work lacked a certain precision that was desirable when you were potentially sitting in the middle of the greatest weapon of mass destruction in the known galaxy.
The system was active, which was terrifying, but beyond that she was having a great deal of trouble determining what, or who, had turned it on.
Some of the systems appear to be running on automatic, if I am reading this correctly. However, that doesnât explain why it suddenly decided to shift from passive monitoring to more active changes in the local gravity fields.
The schematic of the moon displayed on her right was fairly clear, thankfully, sheâd found. It showed a very nice depiction of the local space-time fabric, along with all the local distortions. The Autolycus was clearly visible in orbit, and she could see smaller blips on the projection that likely indicated the locations of the Copperheads as well.
Tracking the gravity fluctuation generated by a craft as small as a Marine Copperhead required a frightening degree of sensitivity. It was, in fact, a feat she would have considered impossible if she werenât looking right at it with her own two eyes.
I need to see calculations of the impact of the new gravity shears on photons and other radiating particles. Daiyu considered that for a moment, then snapped her fingers a couple of times.
âYes, maâam?â
âGet me one of our computers,â she said. âI need to make calculations that I donât want my suit tied up completing.â
âYes, maâam.â
One of the perils of being the available authority on gravitic warping was that she couldnât just pass the task off to anyone else. Possibly one of her subordinates could do the calculations, but not as quickly or as accurately as she could.
There was a pattern in the fluctuations she was seeing, of that there was no doubt. The solution to it was eluding her at the moment, but only for the moment.
It wasnât strictly speaking that the actions she was seeing were impossible in and of themselves, of course. No, the problem was that they were beyond all theoretical limits of the sort of manipulations involved. Until this, all large-scale manipulations of local space-time had to be done via manipulation of mass.
The Earth-based CM generators specifically acted by shaping the way mass interacted with the universe. It offered up to a ninety percent mass shift, according to the best equations available. That is, you could increase or decrease the effective mass of any object in a CM field by about ninety percent. You didnât actually change the mass, of courseâthat was impossible. Rather, you merely hid or exposed more or less mass to the vagaries of the universe about you.
The Priminae technology was similar, albeit a little more efficient, but largely still relied on the same rules. They managed to accomplish far more with the same basic tool set by incorporating planet-sized singularities into their spacecraft.
