The usual caveats must be recalled about the transmission (i.e., accuracy) of this material in the ancient sources, but the passage contains much of interest. The emphasis on the tomb’s placement within a royal park matches the importance of these parks to Cyrus. The emphasis on materials of both Babylonian and Median craftsmanship highlighted the traditions of two of Cyrus’ immediate imperial predecessors. The provisions allowed for the magi (priests) caretakers and guardians of the tomb are of the sort recorded in the Persepolis Fortification tablets of goods for other tombs in the region.27 No evidence of an inscription, in Old Persian or otherwise, has been discovered in modern times. The inscription relayed by Arrian, especially the title “King of Asia,” has no ancient Near Eastern parallels; that bit reads as a Greek construct.
