Where are you, Julia Lundstrom?

I left her a message two hours ago. They said she’d call back. They keep telling me I’m a priority client, so where is she? Two-and-a-half hours. They assured me there was no suspicious activity, but I want to speak with her. She knows my situation.

Am I doing this? Meeting Fitch?

Five minutes.

I couldn’t sit around waiting. Fitch wasn’t hard to find. Spread cheeks, puckered hole, representing Minnesota’s finest escorts. Couple of the same standard reviews you read on every escort’s page. Friendly. Hung. Felt comfortable around him. Based on the private photos he unlocked for me, he’s not bad looking. Nothing’s going to happen physically, so why am I nervous? I’m nervous because they’re scamming me. I’m being fucking scammed. Thomas’s face saying the word seven, that ghoulish relish. Fuck, what am I doing here? Why did I come? Why am I at this shithole motel?

Julia hasn’t called in the last two minutes. Ms. Taylor’s not picking up. I have an appointment. I’m gonna do this, I guess.

The enormous sign with a burned out letter promises YE we have cancies. Of course you do. Thick weeds make the parking lot surface almost as much green as black. Brick exterior looks sturdy, I guess, if you’re searching for compliments. Red awnings burnt into pink. Broken soda machine near the front office. We drove through a middle-class neighborhood to get here, just a block over. Car dealership across the street, and down there, a Walgreens. How can this shitty motel exist here? They must get out-of-towners who skipped internet research. Married nooners. Escorts like Fitch.

“I’m going inside.”

Jian says, “Are you sure?”

“I won’t be long.”

“Should I text you after a certain time?”

The hesitancy in his voice, the closest he’s come to questioning me. He’s making me think twice. No. I have to do this. Make my voice sound normal. Relaxed.

“Less than an hour. Probably half an hour. I’ll text if I need anything.”

“Yes, Mr. Daniels.”

He has a right to be freaked out. I vomited on my shoes and he had to clean them off before I could get in the car. My tip better be double what is normal.

Leaning my first cane out the car door, I don’t feel wobbly. I’m calmer. I extricate myself with care. Jian looks away.

It’s only 6:00 p.m. Sun’s so high, feels like mid-afternoon.

Navigating the parking lot is easy, even with crevices and weeds. After New York, everything is manageable. Where is Ms. Taylor? She can’t be getting groceries this long. She didn’t have plans to visit her sister. Two hours. This is not a big deal. It never dawned on me she may not have voicemail. I guess she always answers right away. Could the VV be using her to get to me? Is she in danger?

Room 118 in grey letters. This is it.

I knock.

The door opens.

The surprise on his face is evident, and while he makes a quick study of me, I do the same. He’s hot, well, maybe once. He didn’t age well.
