“Sure, why not,” I said. “I know this great bar that serves real ale—”

Captain Malika stopped me there. “I was thinking of something slightly more upmarket… like an amarinthe bar,” she said with a smile, “… not the rowdy boozers Chief Ojha prefers to frequent.”

I cleared my throat. “Sure,” I said running a quick search in the background for a suitable venue, “we can do that too.”

We headed for the shuttlechute with me fretting slightly as I scanned my internal results feed for a suitable place. I could barely remember the last time I had a drink at a proper amarinthe bar that wasn’t at best, a pub pretending to be an amarinthe bar.

Inside the shuttlechute pod, Captain Malika turned to me. “So, you’re ex-TSO?” she said, looking into my eyes.

I cleared my throat. “I am,” I said. Oh dear, was my crappy metabolic regulation function giving me hot flushes?

“Clearly you’re not all machine,”she continued interestedly. “Tell me, which parts of you are cyborg and which aren’t?”

I swallowed. “Oh, here and there,” I said trying to sound casual. “Depends on what my augments are of course. Different TSO’s have different augments you see…”

“Of course,” said Captain Malika, looking me up and down.

“But I’m all man I assure you,” I added quickly.

Captain Malika smiled. “That I have no doubt,” she said. “Tell me more…”
