Noel Skum smiled. “That’s the brilliant thing,” he said. “Kids’ taste buds don’t recognize any of the garbage notes in the flavour. To almost every kid, the added bin juice makes it taste like the best thing they’ve ever had.”

“Almost every kid?” said Alan.

“Yes, some vegetarian kids have developed an unusually strong sense of smell,” said Noel Skum. “So, there are a few who are able to detect a binny scent. And adults find the taste repulsive, but then adults always hate things that kids like so that’s not a problem.”

He smiled for a moment.

“Which leads on neatly to the second thing that you need to know. Each vending machine has a recycling chute. Kids can put all their wrappers, cans, food, whatever, into the vending machines. That way, each machine will be able to create its own bin juice at absolutely no cost to us. So, once we get kids hooked on SkumSnax, we’ll then start charging huge amounts for refills.”

“But people will stop buying it, if it is too expensive,” said Alan.

A horrible smile flickered across Noel Skum’s face. “No they will not,” he said. “Once someone gets a taste for my SkumSnax they will do anything to get their hands on their next bag, including paying whatever I charge them. Now go away and stop bothering me.”

And with that, Noel Skum pushed a button on the armrest of his chair and Alan’s face disappeared.

Noel Skum tapped his fingers together and smiled a wicked smile. “Oh, yes,” he said. “All I have to do is sit back and wait for the refill orders to start rolling in.”

He opened a can of orange soda and took a long swig. All this talk of bin juice had made him feel a bit queasy and he needed something to settle his tummy.
