TWENTY-EIGHT

We arrived at dusk on SEAL Wolf Island. He said he was off for a swim and left in his swim shorts, happy for me to see bruises and scrapes from the night before across his sculpted flesh. We had an unspoken agreement as far as he was concerned: ask him no questions and he’d tell me no lies. No worries. I was going to find out the answers another way.

I couldn’t locate his phone anywhere, but I knew it would work as long as it was in the vicinity. I picked up two numbers and cloned them both. It took thirty seconds. Gotcha. That done, I considered my options while I stayed with Cyrus. I should look around the island. I should listen to Cyrus on his phone. I should see what was in the Bluebeard room. I should carry on flying out with him to question pilots. Really, that was the main thrust of it. I should do all this without his knowledge or igniting his wrath enough to turn him into the wolfman.

I glanced out of the window and spotted him thrashing through the water. Stroke after stroke of powerful movements dragged his body through the waves and out to the orange horizon. He had extraordinary energy. He was unafraid of the elements, completely at ease in the wild environment. It was sort of a turn-on if you didn’t question it too much. I watched him through until he disappeared, imagining him doing laps of the island.

I kicked myself internally for wasting an opportunity. With him safely out to sea, I could look in his Bluebeard room. There had to be some reason for keeping it locked and not talking about it.

I left the kitchen and reached for the handle on the other door in the house. It was still locked. Above it was a flat pad and a large lock. I systematically searched through all his drawers and cupboards, looking for the key.

There were stacks of bright white crockery and stainless steel cooking utensils. His storage was neat and without clutter. I moved the search into his bedroom. The bottom drawer of his bedside table contained a bunch of a dozen keys. One of them had to be for the Bluebeard room.

I listened for any sounds because I couldn’t see him in the ocean, but I didn’t know when I’d get another chance to look. I hesitated. It was already dark outside. He could be home soon.

I approached the door. I considered the lock and tried a flat, gold key that was the right size. It fitted. I turned it.

Behind me, I heard the front door swing open.

Cyrus’ nostrils flared. He hustled me to one side and yanked the keys out of the lock. He crossed his arms and looked down at me. Seawater dripped from his hair to his bare chest and into my top.

It rooted me to the spot as I searched for something to say.

He leant further over me, bent to my ear and said, ‘You never go in there.
