28 – City Under the Sea

Farrell made a few comms after receiving Ginji’s location from Dr. Ravello. General Drager made a few comms. And after some guarantees and assurances that Farrell understood Ginji was now a free agent and no longer under the control of NSMZ, he was sent his ex-tech’s location.

After more comms and a few hours of waiting, Farrell received word about how he would meet the people who would take him to Ginji. The security around Ginji seemed a bit extreme, but he was instructed, leaving behind his weapon and watchcom in a safe in a hotel in Orlando, Florida.

A long-distance skycar picked him up at a private hangar at the Orlando airport, and minutes later, he was flying over the water-inundated ruins of Miami and over the ocean, where floating cities made of old boats tied together shifted on gentle waves. During bad weather, these floating cities would motor to the closest island or shore to weather it out. Most were made out a plastiwood to endure the strong storms and could seal up watertight to keep them afloat like a cork.

Throughout the ride, he thought about Wyatt DeLuca and the ring. When he arrived back in Orlando, he’d comm Cassia to asked her to comb back through the ring purchaser client list to see if they had missed another angle. Something told him that the DeLucas were involved in helping Joshua. That supposition had a big hole in it: there were no logical reasons for them to help the kid.

Then again, too many coincidences involving the DeLucas circled back to Joshua.

And now, Wyatt DeLuca was wearing the ring.

But there had been no evidence that Joshua Alvaro had ever been in the facility. Cassia had Argus Panoptes go through all available security feeds from Panama to Seattle, and nothing.

His initial plan was to lean on Piper DeLuca, seek permission to bring her into NSMZ for questioning. He’d called General Drager, outlining his suspicions. The woman was then placed under separate surveillance. So far there was still no solid evidence that she was directly involved with Alvaro other than circumstantial.

The skycar started its descent toward a floating pier near an area where, Farrell estimated, Key West had once hosted parties for kids on spring break, and the rich had kept beachside mansions, before it nearly disappeared due to worsening hurricanes over the Gulf and rising waters.

After the skycar landed on the floating dock, he was met by two women in shorts and teal t-shirts with the logo of a frond of sea kelp over ocean waves. He showed them his ID when prompted.

“You came unarmed?” one asked.

“As requested.”

From the dock, their mode of transportation revealed itself as a small sub.
