perfect. She had thirty-nine years of living under her belt, and a hot, gorgeous husband who lusted after her eighteen-year-old body and whom she lusted after in return. She had never known love could be like this.

To add to her joy, Kieran had encouraged she start tending to the rose garden near the tower they would be moving into soon. Gardening had been a hobby of hers back in her own time, but she had lacked time with working seventy hours a week for the magazine. Now she had more time than she knew what to do with, but she loved it…and it appeared Kieran appreciated her efforts, because he

complimented her on the garden’s beauty every day, telling her that when they moved into the tower

rooms, he would love to look out at the garden because it would always remind him of her.

She smiled at the memory, the soft expression on his face as he had said those sweet words. Kieran the Black? What was so black about the man? He did not have a black heart, nor a dark spirit.

The history books had it all wrong. His enemies might look at him as The Black One, but everyone around him

absolutely adored him, including herself.

Her gaze strayed to where Kieran and his men sparred. The clash of swords in the warm afternoon

captured her attention. Olivier stood at the ready, holding sword in hand when Kieran had need of it. He had been attending Kieran more these past few days, and Lizzie sorely missed the squire’s companionship. Mary had taken his place, which was fine, though the maid tended to treat Lizzie more like a child than an adult. She had to continually remind herself that the maid looked at Elizabeth as though she was a child. She had a long way to go before that would change.

“The men leave in two days,” Mary said, bending over to cut another rose she then placed in the basket.

Lizzie’s stomach clenched. “Where do they go?”

“Langaer.”

“Isn’t that Richard’s fief?”

Mary nodded. “Yes, Lord Faulkner,” “ sheshe replied, reminding Lizzie with a look that she should not use Richard’s Christian name. It seemed too familiar, Mary had commented, especially now that she was the Lady D’Arcy. “There is talk of another Saxon uprising. Neighboring barons will meet at Langaer to talk strategy. I believe many question Lord Faulkner’s fealty to King William.”

Lizzie swallowed past the lump in her throat. “Is Hugh going with Kieran?”

Mary looked at her as though she’d grown another head. “Of course. His lordship would not go into battle without Hugh at his side.
