As students begin to write, I circulate about the room, stopping to talk briefly with each student at their eye level. My main purpose here is to encourage, support, and affirm each writer’s efforts. The following comments are typical ones that I make during these short chats. Usually, I make one such comment quickly and move on.

I like that title. I know exactly what your poem will be about.

I saw you rereading your first few lines. That’s what thoughtful writers do.

You seem to be having trouble getting started. Let’s think together about the poems we looked at today. I know you have [a pet] too. You could write about that. I’ll help you think about how to begin.

I like the way your poem looks on the page. I can tell you’re thinking about that as you write.

What an interesting topic. I can’t wait to see how your poem turns out.

I like the words you used. I can picture exactly how you were feeling.
