* * *

Luke went to his bedroom and fell into a chair. He sighed and rubbed his eyes. They still stung from the smoke of the fire, but it was his emotions that had been taking a beating the last few days. He wanted so badly to hold on to his anger toward Abby, yet each time she found herself in danger, all he did was worry about her.

And it was more than simply nostalgia or a concern for the safety of the mother of his child. Panic had gripped him again at the idea that something might have happened to her. That he might never see her smile again or hear her voice.

A part of him that he’d thought was long buried—the part that longed to start a family—had sprung back to life, and here was one almost ready-made for him to step into. But how could he ever get past her betrayal or her stubborn reliance on faith in a God who allowed so many terrible things to happen?

His daughter hidden from him, then abducted.

Abby and Dustin nearly killed by an oncoming train, then a fire.

Michelle Simmons’s murder by a vicious killer without Luke being able to stop it.

He did his best to push Michelle’s death from his mind, but it refused to budge, everything about the memory reminding him that it was his fault. She shouldn’t have died. He’d been there, raiding the abductor’s home. They’d had him cornered physically and with enough evidence to put him away for life. They should have been able to prevent him from taking any more lives...but they hadn’t.

He hadn’t.

Jack Shelton had abducted and murdered six women before they’d uncovered his identity, but his final victim had been a twenty-six-year-old federal agent he’d grabbed from behind and used as a human shield. Luke had hesitated at taking the shot, wanting to take him in alive but also afraid of hurting Michelle, and Shelton had seen his chance to claim one more victim, slitting her throat before Luke could fire his weapon and end his reign of terror.

He stood and pulled his hands through his hair. Everything that had happened to Kenzie, to Abby, to Michelle.

Where was God in all of that?

Nowhere.

If He existed at all, He’d never lifted one finger to help Luke or any of the people Luke cared about.

He grabbed his jacket and pulled it on as he headed downstairs and out the back door. He needed to do something to work out some frustration and a ride was just what he needed. The ranch was pretty well locked down and the security alerts would come right to his cell phone, notifying him if something or someone set them off.

He walked to the stables. His grandfather’s ranch manager, Ed Lance, had taught Luke to ride when he was eight. It was a skill he didn’t use often, but he wanted to put it to work now.

Ed was in the horse barn cleaning when Luke entered. “What are you doing here?” Luke asked him.
