“What’s that, Boss?”

“Did any of the scouts check for an ambush force on the alien side, before they went to look for their civilization?”

“They scanned both sides of the confrontation for ambush forces, Boss. I didn’t figure you wanted to go into that mess without knowing just what everyone was up to.”

“Good work, Topper. What did they find?”

“Amazingly enough, neither side is set up to ambush the other.”

“That is good news. Have the deep scouts found anything more about the reptiles’ civilization, then?”

“Well, I’m not sure, Boss. They found a planet that seems to be busier than the rest, but I’m not sure you could call it a seat of government. I’m beginning to think that these people go about governing differently than humans, or any of the other species we’ve met so far.”

“Interesting. I wonder what implications that has for trying to get along with them?”

“That sounds like an organic question, Boss.”

“Safety of the ship and crew in an undetermined state of affairs doesn’t fall under your job description?”

Tex said, “I told you he wouldn’t let you by with that one, Skipper.”

Topper replied, “So you did. Do you feel the need to go lubricate the hinges on all the turrets?”

“No, Skipper. Scotti already had them checked. They’re good to go.”

“Is that right? Are you sure you don’t need to double check?”

“I’ll be good Skipper. Sorry.”

“Sorry you got caught, maybe. It’s fun to wind you up, though.”

“You got me good, Skipper.”

I said, “Sounds like you’ve got crew morale well in hand, Skipper. I’ll head for the office.”

“I’ll get ahold of you, if anything comes in, Boss.”

“Thanks.”

Jeeves had my coffee waiting for me. I sat down and started on the inbox. There was quite a bit more than I was used to, while we were cruising in FTL. I went through it, and only the scout reports amounted to much. It was like Topper had said, they hadn’t found the kind of hierarchical system we would expect in another species’ space. I thought about it for a bit, and then decided it was a mystery for another day. The last message was from Dixie, saying that she had found a small problem in Maggie’s brain, and the autodoc was going to be able to fix it. She still didn’t think letting her go back to her babysitting job would be a good idea. Jeeves saw me close the file, and asked, “Off to the gym, Boss?”

“I think I better. No telling what we may get into, when we get there.”

“I’ll tell Enik you’re on your way.”

“Thanks.”

I got through the workout without being quite as worn out. Enik said, “You’re getting better, Boss. I didn’t think a human could move like that.”

“Master Bruce has taught me every art he can think of. I have to think all that is an advantage.”

“See you tomorrow?”

“Of course. Thank you for the lesson, Master.”

“You’re welcome, Boss.”

I made it to lunch on time. Milly asked, “Did you skip the gym today, Boss? You don’t look as worn out as usual.
