An early morning call from Daniel’s office woke Maggie.

“Hello?”

“Hello, Mrs. Wheeler, it’s Brenda from the office. I’m sorry to call so early, but I wanted to reach you before you put anything else on your calendar for today.”

“Yes, hello, Brenda. That’s fine. What can I do for you?”

“Well, Mr. Patterson asked me to call you to see if you would be able to come into the office to collect items from your husband’s office. You see we’ve hired someone new, and although Mr. Wheeler took some things from his office, he left behind several items that we just assumed he would come back in to retrieve. Of course, since his unexpected passing, that wasn’t going to happen. Mr. Patterson didn’t want to just throw these things out without checking with you first.”

The last thing Maggie wanted to do was to see Richard Patterson again, but she supposed there wasn’t anything to be done about it. She was curious what things Daniel felt weren’t important enough to take with him when he quit. Curious or not, Maggie wasn’t certain she wanted to know the answer. She was surprised it had taken his office this long to get in touch with her.

“I can come in tomorrow morning, Brenda, if that works for you. How is nine o’clock?”

“Yes, thank you so much, Mrs. Wheeler. That would be great. I’ll see you then. Goodbye.”

Due to rush hour traffic, it was a slow drive into the city. Maggie marveled that so many people took this route twice a day. She thought it was no wonder so many struggled with stress due to their daily commute.

She parked her car in the underground garage and made her way up to Daniel’s office. As she got out of the elevator, she could feel several eyes on her. To avoid the awkward stares, Maggie had hoped Brenda would be at the front desk to greet her. Unfortunately, she had to announce herself with the receptionist, who directed Maggie to a leather chair in the waiting area.

With every tick of the clock, Maggie became increasingly agitated. Her heart started to beat faster, and she thought it might have been less stressful for her had she told Brenda to throw everything into the trash. Instead, she felt exposed and awkward and was certain she was now the subject of office scrutiny and gossip. She was almost ready to leave when Brenda came around the corner, apologizing for making Maggie wait so long.

Maggie lied, “I understand. It’s no trouble at all.”

They walked to the end of the floor and to Daniel’s corner office. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls made Maggie worried she wouldn’t be able to go through drawers in private.

Richard Patterson joined them. He approached Maggie and hugged her, giving her an air kiss.

“Hello, Maggie. How have you been?”

“I’m doing fine, Richard. Thank you.”

Richard held on to Maggie’s hands and kept nodding his head long after Maggie’s response. He turned to Brenda and thanked her. Brenda left Richard and Maggie alone so that they could talk.
