“Was ‘the picnic’ really only two weeks ago, Kevin?” Suzy asked as she tugged her suitcase out of the back of the van. “The picnic” had become a special code, a symbol of the happiness that circled around the two of them like a soft cloud.

“Two weeks, one day, and two and a half hours,” Kevin joked as he locked the vehicle, then guided Suzy into the airport. He felt her laughter as they entered the terminal. It was wonderful. Everything about Suzy Keller was wonderful these days.

“This’ll be a great trip, Kevin. I’ve always wanted to neck on an airplane.”

He wrinkled his brow in mock reprimand.

“Actually, Kevin, it might be our last chance. We should take advantage of it. After the Today Show broadcast, everyone will know who we are—”

“You are, Suzy.”

“Whatever. Our private life will have to be kept private!” She threw her arms around him in the middle of the terminal, her lovely green eyes locking onto his. “But if I attack you now, no one will even blink.”

He brushed a kiss across her smooth cheek, then wrapped an arm around her and guided her toward the gate. Who was she kidding? he thought. Every male within seventy yards was watching Suzy Keller with wide-eyed, unabashed lust. Instinctively he pulled her closer.

He wondered later how he’d lasted those endless miles between Kansas City and New York with Suzy pressed so closely to his side—and not even the hope of a cold shower. He’d tried to submerge his libidinous hunger by eating everything in sight: his dinner, and Suzy’s, and the poor lady’s across the aisle who wanted only to nap. And two Scotch and waters helped down the fires burning in his veins.

Nevertheless, the hotel was a welcome sight. When they’d gotten settled and Suzy pushed gently on his door from her adjoining room, he opened the door so quickly she nearly fell through into his arms.

“Kevin? Were you leaving”—her gaze traveled the length of him—“in your robe? I should warn you, it’s turned quite chilly out.”

He grinned. “No, dear one. I was about to invite you in for a nightcap. To calm the nerves before the big day.”

She swept into the room, her own robe tied tightly around her waist, her face glowing. “Oh, Kevin, I can’t believe it’s happening!” She sank down onto a soft upholstered couch near the marble fireplace and curled her legs up beneath her. “Me, Suzy Keller, on the Today Show! Who would have thought …?”

“Anyone who has known you for longer than ten seconds.” He poured them each a glass of brandy from the well-stocked bar and sat down next to her. “I have to admit you were right from the start,” he teased her, stroking the soft burnished waves of hair curling over the edge of her robe.

“What do you mean?”

He let her hair slide from between his fingers and signed, “Hiring you. I’m not often talked into things. But this time I’m very glad I was.”

She looked up at him, then set the brandy down on the glass-topped coffee table.
