The Doncellita sputtered to life.

While Shu stood guard over Worona, Grussmacher ran another systems check. It took the co-pilot less than twenty minutes to pronounce the shuttle flightworthy.

“Barely,” he qualified. “It’s running rough. She’s going to buck a bit as you’re trying to achieve escape velocity. With two engines, the thrust power was well beyond the minimum. With just one engine, you’re still above that threshold but only barely so. Keep her steady and hold course.”

“Got it,” Kemper said.

Together, he and Grussmacher scavenged everything useful from the shuttle. Food, medical supplies, tools, and equipment. Kemper hoisted Worona once more and made the short journey back to the deserted village. Laden with provisions, Shu and Grussmacher followed.

After a short discussion, they chose the sturdiest and best positioned hut. Kemper put Worona inside and helped Grussmacher gather wood for the fire. It was late afternoon by the time they finished.

All their tasks complete, the trio stood awkwardly next to the unlit fire. Kemper had misgivings about his decision but he put those aside. They were committed now. He reached out and clasped Grussmacher’s hand.

“Best of luck,” he said, in a husky voice.

“Complete the mission,” Grussmacher replied, his own words thick with emotion.

Shu dispensed with the handshake and drew Grussmacher into a short embrace. They exchanged no words.

Then Kemper and Shu turned away and started back toward the shuttle. It seemed to Kemper it was the longest walk of his life.
