Chapter 39
While Jake goes to find Malcolm, I tell Leo I want to check out the Tiny House and say hello to Angela. It needs a few steps and has cinder blocks in place as a temporary option. Thereâs a front window looking out on the porch, and the open door has a window.
âKnock, knock. Angela?â
âCome on in.â
Sheâs in the kitchen working on putting things away. They only brought the essentials and things she would really hate to lose. Since she and Tim own a decent-sized house, it would have taken a full-size U-Haul, at least, to get everything they own here. I know when she left, she was sure this would be a temporary stay until the power came back on and the people whoâd arrived from Denver could go back home. Now, with the refineries exploding, it could be long term for all of us.
The angry howl of a cat reverberates throughout the little place.
Snowball, Artâs cat. âWhereâs the cat?â
âI have him locked in the bathroom. Heâs not very happy about it.â
âI can tell. Can I have the nickel tour?â
âKatie, itâs a Tiny House. You can get the whole tour standing at the front door,â she says with a laugh. âItâs really cute.â
I have to agree. The walls, floor, loft, and ceiling are all in natural-stained tongue and groove pine. Very nice.
The living room has a chair, a futon, and a table on each end. Upon closer inspection, the tables are TV trays. The staircase on the left side of the room is more like a ladder that leans. Under each step is a pull-out box, which doubles as a drawer.
âDo you have electricity?â
âNot yet. Jake gave us lanterns and flashlights for last night. Jake says he might have a plan.â
I nod, anxious to see the place. I decide to explore the loft first.
Itâs interesting. The loft covers the entire space, except for the space needed to climb the ladder. Thereâs a railing on two sides and the wall on the other, so only the spot to enter the loft is opened. A queen-sized mattress is on the kitchen end with a smaller mattress on the other end.
Back downstairs, Angela steps out of the kitchen so I can check it out. âItâs definitely a one-butt kitchen,â Angela says with a laugh. âTim loves it, thinking it will get him out of cooking. I plan on lots of grilling, though, since we donât have appliances in here. Heâll be in charge of grilling. Jake put that there this morning,â Angela says, motioning to a wooden section in the otherwise granite countertop.
âI guess the previous owners took the stovetop out. This was a repossessed place Jake got a deal on. Jake gave us a little stove to cook on. Itâs an alcohol stove, like the kind used on boats.â
âHmmmm. Why did he have a stove for a boat?â
âI asked that too! I guess Mom bought it online to use in the bigger cabin, the one Calley is staying in, but they decided to go with a two-burner propane cooktop, like in the studio apartment.
