Chapter thirty-nine

Pressing my back against the wall and trying to slow my breathing, I looked down at Kane next to my thigh. I was about to say “Are you ready?” but didn’t have to.

He nodded.

Gripping the end of the blanket, I lifted my hands up to my shoulder and felt the three water bottles inside bang lightly against my back.

Then, I heard movement.

Coming close.

Feet shuffling across the dirt, trying not to make a noise.

I drew long, slow breaths. In and out. In and out. I watched the shadow of a man as it moved across the ceiling, growing larger. The guy had been too dumb to realize he was being outed by light from the fire. The thick canopy of trees above us hid away the only illumination in the sky.

Up there was the moon.

Just a chunk of rock that had fallen in love with the Earth. Always close, as if waiting to be needed. But the Earth did not need the moon.

Or maybe it did?

It affected tides, the weather, and a six-foot-seven French Canadian. Maybe that chunk of rock was more important than anyone had given it credit for?

Crack.

The sound of the snapping branch made me flinch, and I squeezed the end of the blanket tighter, readying my arms, my muscles already beginning to complain from the weight of the bottles banging against my lower back.

The ceiling shadow got a twin, this one passing along the edge of the windowpane.

I lifted my hands off my shoulder.

Breathe in, breathe out.

The tip of the rifle poked through, like the nose of a woodland creature sniffing out what might be a meal. Or an even larger animal.

Everything in me wanted to strike, bring my bottles-and-blanket club down and smash the rifle. Not yet. Not yet.

The barrel poked farther through. Then another inch more.

I knew that in the next few seconds, the man with the gun would quickly switch positions to avoid a strike, sliding to his right. I had to hit him before he did.

I held my breath and launched my hands forward, their momentum carrying the water bottles inside the blanket. I watched as my world slowed down, the dark fabric crossing over my shoulder and toward the rifle stock.

I’d overestimated.

The bottles themselves swung down about a foot on the other side of the rifle. Shit!

Still, I pulled the blankets, and when they struck the barrel, it hitched downward. The man gripped his weapon tighter, which created a pivot point, and the part of the blanket with the bottles inside then arched upward in its circuit and smacked the underside of the stock, smashing his fingers.

The Devil’s Dawn gang member let out a yelp, releasing his fingers, and the rifle tumbled out of his hands! But instead of falling inside, it spun away, falling to the dirt outside.

With the man now disarmed, Kane didn’t miss a beat.

He ran to the opposite side of the room, leapt up, and dove right at the spiderwebbed window. The glass shattered, and I saw shards burst into the air and a fuzzy dog ass disappear into the night.
