Wet sick covered the front of Kyle’s new uniform.

Hayden couldn’t help but smile to himself, despite his own queasiness.

A glance to the back of the bridge revealed that Katie hadn’t vomited, but she was pale and sweaty. Stella, sitting next to her, glanced back at Hayden and winked. She seemed smug.

He shook his head and frowned, wondering whether she had anything to do with Katie’s discomfort. He wouldn’t put it past her to have suggested Katie and Kyle sneak off for a quick breakfast together before departure, despite Hayden’s warnings to them.

Pavlovich sat in the command chair, his nose wrinkled in disgust, though there was also a glint of amusement in his eye. Kyle was not the only one to embarrass himself. With Scimitar’s crew incarcerated on Earth, none of Thomas’s people who now manned the ship had experienced the effects of a FTL jump before. To their credit, most managed to hold on to their stomach contents, but they all appeared worse for wear.

“Well done, people,” said Pavlovich. His gaze fell on Kyle. “Well, most of you. Trust me when I say that this does not get any easier with experience. We’ve got some time before our next jump. Get yourselves cleaned up.”

He motioned for Hayden to approach. “How did we do, Commander?”

“Cora says there is no structural damage, and nobody is reporting anything more severe than nausea. We can only hope the inoculations we all took worked.”

Pavlovich looked at the crew. “From the looks of things, most people are okay. How are you feeling?”

“Better than previous jumps.” He glanced at Kyle, who was mopping up his mess.

“This would be a lot better with our own people on the bridge. What is your assessment, Kaine? Are these people up to another jump?”

Hayden surveyed the crew. “We have some recovery time. Ships from Titan won’t arrive here for another couple of hours. My concern is the fighting fitness of our new team of Rangers after our transit.”

“I’m not worried about them. They’re a tough lot and will suck it up to get the job done. Most of them have probably gone into combat hungover more than a few times. My bigger worry is about jumping into Titan’s atmosphere.”

“We arrived here within metres of our intended coordinates, essentially a bull’s-eye. I don’t foresee any problems.”

“Then I guess I’ll authorize the mission to proceed. Deploy our drones to begin pretending to be Malliac.”

“Aye-aye, Captain.”

Pavlovich settled back into his chair. “Now we wait.”
