Young Jack Hunter was pleasant company, a fact that surprised her to no end; after spending three days on a ship traveling here, the fact that she hadn't snapped at him in her exhaustion was in and of itself a recommendation.
The young man was somewhat perplexing: deathly serious at one moment and then making jokes in the next. A shame he was so young! Quick wit, good looks and a talent for keeping her on her toes: these were the things that would attract her attention in short order. Gabi forced herself to put the idea out of her head. Men in their early twenties were off limits. No exceptions.
With a few carefully chosen questions, she gained a sense of the political climate down on the planet. It was clear that this was all very new to Jack. That made sense when you stopped to think about it.
Less than five years ago, the question of whether it was even possible to travel the stars was still hotly debated in his society, and now the people of Earth were being led into the galactic community. So much of what was often considered common knowledge had been withheld from them. The existence of the Overseers, for one. A curious fact, that. The Overseers had revealed themselves to humans on every world except their place of origin. Why?
A quick train ride brought them to a series of long, gray corridors that were all but indistinguishable from one another. Jack led her through the hallways, making smalltalk and describing some of the local culture. Apparently she had to visit someone called Tim Horton? She filed that away for later.
Jena Morane's office was a small room where black floor tiles stretched from ugly gray wall to ugly gray wall. Beyond the desk with its dark glass surface, a large window looked out on the emptiness.
When they arrived, they found Jena sitting on the edge of her desk with a book in hand. Tall and slim, she wore a pair of black pants and a gray tank-top, her auburn hair cut short and neat.
âJen.â
Jack stepped into the office in front of her, approaching his superior with his hands clasped behind his back. âYou wanted me to bring you Gabi Valtez,â he said, gesturing to her. âI present you with Gabi Valtez.â
Morane hopped off the desk and drew herself up to full height, marching across the room at a brisk pace. âSo this is our new intelligence liaison,â she said. âWell, you could not have come at a better time.â
Gabrina lifted her chin with a smooth expression, blinking at the woman. âI'm told you requested me personally,â she began. âWe've never met; so I have to assume that you have some reason for choosing me.â
Closing her eyes, Jena took a deep breath and bowed her head. âI do at that,â she said. âI've reviewed your service record, Agent Valtez. You've got a knack for asking the right questions.â
âThere are questions you want answered.â
âYes,â Morane replied, spinning around to face the window.
