Chapter Thirteen

Trailing the two Russians from the pub had brought success. They followed them until they stepped inside a mid-to-low-class apartment building, the kind that didn’t have an elevator. It had the appearance of an older building, one people would revere as a classic from decades past, while those who could afford it moved to the more modern buildings the city of Prague had to offer.

It wasn’t possible to enter the building itself without being noticed, so they chose to wait and watch from the shadowy seclusion of a handy alley almost directly opposite. Their efforts were finally rewarded, although only after they circled the block again to avoid remaining in one place for too long and perhaps raising suspicion. The terrace door of one of the apartments on the third floor opened and their mark stepped outside and closed the door quickly behind him, drew a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, and lit one. The already low temperatures had begun to plummet as night started to fall. Some people needed their fix, no matter what, and since Solodkov was probably a guest in a safehouse someone else owned, he would have to get his nicotine fix out in the cold.

His habit proved to be their stroke of good fortune. They would have identified where the man was anyway, but now that they knew where the safe house was, considerable time had been saved and they could turn their attention to their plans to reach him. Molina wanted the Russian to be eliminated before he could spearhead an operation that could be detrimental to Pegasus’ profit margins, which Savage supposed was his job these days, even if he didn’t like it.

That said, he could already guess that there wouldn’t be too many people who would volunteer for the job when they returned to headquarters. It didn’t look like Molina had brought in too many hitters with her team of mostly techies, but she still could have brought even minimal backup for him.

But no. It appeared he would be expected to accomplish the mission alone, and if that were the case, he definitely needed a plan of attack.

By the time they returned to the command center, the team—prompted by Molina’s phone call—had acquired the plans for the building, which gave him at least some frame of reference to work with. He dedicated the time he had to memorize every detail about the building.

“What kind of ingress plan do you have?” she asked and broke his concentration once again. He scowled at her and tapped his pen on the table.

“It would have been easier to run this with a partner and a little help to get me inside,” he said. That was usually the optimum scenario, but he was also used to improvising when he lacked resources, and this would be no different. “But I can go in alone. That’s not a problem.”

“I could always go with you,” she volunteered.

He shook his head decisively. “I don’t know you and don’t trust you to cover my back instead of bugging out should things get hot.
