Nine

Susan stared at him, fear crashing through her.

“How—” she began in a threadbare whisper, “how did you find me?”

“Lettice sent me after you,” he snapped. She had never seen him look so angry before. His features could have been carved from marble, for all the cold expression in them. “Why didn’t you come to me, Susan?”

“Here’s your ticket, miss,” the clerk said, pushing a stub through the slot of his wire cage.

She picked it up with shaking fingers. She had thought the spur-of-the-moment plan to get away would succeed because it was spur of the moment. She had checked behind her taxi all the way to the station, and she was positive no one had followed. She had furtively watched the people inside the station, and no one had paid attention to her or looked suspicious. She had thought herself safely away with only a major fight from her grandmother. But if Remy had found her so easily, so would others. Her stomach rolled at the horrible thought.

“I have to go,” she forced herself to say. Her voice was calm and firm. “I can’t stay. And it’s not up for discussion—”

“Another of the same,” Remy said to the clerk, shoving several bills through the slot.

“Remy, what are you doing?”

He didn’t answer until his train ticket was in his hand. “Let’s go.”

“But—”

She had no time to protest as he hustled her through the station to the track platforms. She was numb with shock, conscious only of his strong fingers gripping her elbow, guiding her through the people. Their train was on the track already, its engine throbbing heavily. It was a mid-evening commuter and due to leave in a few minutes. Passengers were still filing onto it.

“Take the last car,” Remy said, steering her to its door.

She stopped dead. “Remy, you’re not going with me. I … it’s dangerous to be with me.”

“We’ll argue the point on the train,” he said, then grabbed her around the waist and hoisted her onto the car’s steps.

She opened her mouth to protest.

“You’re the one who’s in a hurry,” he reminded her.

She immediately closed her mouth and climbed into the car’s interior. Remy was right behind her. The car was packed, nearly standing room only. Half the passengers were little old lady gamblers going home with their winnings, and the other half were casino employees exhausted from dealing all day with little old lady gamblers.

Remy directed her to the front of the car, where there were still several empty seats.

“Here,” he said, and they sat down together on a small bench that faced the back of the train. It was also on the far side from the platform, and she could see out easily, but it would be difficult for anyone to see her. She was very aware of Remy’s body, warm and comforting next to hers—and she was scared out of her wits that he was with her.

“Remy—”

“Wait until we’re moving.”

“No. That will be too late.” She kept her voice low. She had to convince him to leave her.
