Chapter 12
The sun had inched over the horizon by the time they reached the construction site. As Josh expected, his boss barely grumbled as they exchanged vehicle keys, but getting out of the city in rush hour traffic burned up twice as much time as hoped. They arrived at the Chevalier home in an Albany suburb a little after noon.
Ted and Sara warmly welcomed their long-lost cousin and his fiancée as though they'd known them for ages. "I hope you're hungry," Sara said. "I didn't know what you might like so I picked up a little of lots of different things at the deli. It will just take me a minute to put it all out."
"Oh, you really don't need to feed us. We justâ"
"Thank you," Josh interrupted, cutting Bevvy off with a nudge. "We're starving."
Sara led the way to the dining room where the table was attractively set for four. "Now, don't share anything important until I can hear it also."
A few minutes later the table was crowded with an array of salads, meats, cheeses and breads. Once Sara sat down and they all had food on their plates, Ted said, "I have to admit, Josh, that despite my talk about researching the family history, I haven't done anything about it. And, unfortunately, I don't remember much about youâSara and I were already married when you were sent to stay with my parents. Only that you had a lot of problems and my parents already had more than they could handle with my twin sisters' broods. I don't remember them explaining why you were with them or why you left except they weren't able to help. But then they were always very secretive about my mother's family."
Josh shrugged. "They did what they had to do. Believe me I'm not here to blame anyone for anything. I'm just looking for a few missing pieces."
"Perhaps," Sara suggested, "if you share what facts you do know about the family, something could jog Ted's memory and then the scrapbook might fill in the rest."
Bevvy gave Josh a look that ordered him to tell them what he had told her and, after taking a deep breath, he did.
For a moment after Josh delivered his very brief knowledge, no one spoke.
"What a terrible story," Sara said with teary eyes.
"I'm truly sorry my parents couldn't do more for you," Ted said sincerely. "And I'm even sorrier that I never pushed my parents into telling me about the family secrets."
Josh shrugged again. "There was nothing you could have done to change things. Besides, you know what they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
Bevvy reached over and covered his hand with hers. "And more understanding."
"And now you're about to get married. How did the two of you meet?"
Josh took a large bite of his sandwich and motioned for Bevvy to answer. Generously embellishing on the truth, she told a romantic tale of getting lost in Manhattan, walking into a bar called Santo's to get directions, being harassed by a rude man and being rescued by Josh.
