At practice that afternoon, even though Robert was still a no-show, Cindy still did not seem alarmed. As per usual, the cast and crew were gathered around the front of the stage, prior to the rehearsal, as Cindy went through some reminders.

“Ivana and Jenny have set up a photo shoot for the billboard we are having made for opening night,” Cindy announced. “I believe there is a call sheet…” She didn’t look up from her notes, but she pointed at Ivana, who was smiling sweetly and holding up a piece of paper.

Cindy went on. “Lara.” She pointed at her. “Make sure you check with Ivana to save you a slot since you won’t be here tomorrow.”

Lara had already spoken to Cindy about getting permission to skip Friday’s practice because she had college interviews scheduled after school. And it wasn’t like the play took precedence over college applications, so it wasn’t a big deal. Cindy had easily agreed and just wished her luck.

But Bonnie had to comment. “Hey, how come she gets to skip practice?”

Lara looked over and met her gaze.

However unhappy Bonnie may have been about sharing Zane’s rehearsal time with Lara, Bonnie was still being an overbearing prima like normal, except that she would always just make a show of hanging on to Zane’s arm every five seconds or giggle girlishly at everything he says—as if, now more than ever, she needed to remind everyone just exactly who was the “real leading lady.”

“I know for certain that Lara is way ahead of everyone on memorizing their lines,” Cindy told Bonnie, before regarding the rest of the cast. “In fact, you would all do well to follow in Lara’s example. Especially you two.” She pointed at Bonnie again, and Zane.

Bonnie’s jaw dropped in utter revulsion.

“Cindy, you just have to accept the fact that we can’t all be geniuses,” Zane remarked with a wink, making everyone laugh.

After announcements, Ivana was going around, asking for updates on the extra props tasks, and she eventually came up to Lara.

“Updates, please? Box #13?” Ivana prompted.

“Uh…it’s… ongoing,” Lara replied, trying not to grimace.

Work on the vines was seriously slow-going, and every time she finished painting one section, it was like a new section would come out of nowhere. It was as though the ivy vines were actually alive, and growing, and pissing her off.

Ivana tilted her head. “Remember everyone, dress rehearsal will come sooner than you think,” she called out, looking around at everyone, before looking straight at Lara. “You may be a genius with memorizing words, but maybe you can apply yourself to something that doesn’t only concern yourself for a change.” She faked a smile.

Lara just shook her head. She knew there was no point in saying anything to her defense.

“Oh, and we’ve moved your boxes to the backstage because they were getting all cluttered up down here. Don’t worry,” she smiled disingenuously again. “You’ll have a lot of space back there…all by yourself,” she added, smirking.

Aha, isolation, Lara thought, pursing her lips. It was most likely Bonnie’s next move.
