But Callan hadn’t.

Now, with each passing mile, his mood soured. Everything about this trip was wrong.

Dawn probably thought spending the weekend with his parents took their relationship to the next level. She had no idea the next level didn’t exist. Ever since the weekend when she’d been ill, he’d clamped down even harder on his feelings. Quashed them without remorse. He had to. It was the only way he could survive around Dawn without driving himself crazy.

He hated Brighton. Hated the memories associated with the seaside town. He lifted a sweaty palm from the steering wheel and wiped his brow.

Flashes of the past invaded his thoughts. Twisted metal. Fire. Screams.

Callan exhaled slowly, pushing the images out of his mind.

“You okay?” Dawn asked. “You’re a little pale.”

“I’m fine,” he said in a clipped voice. She looked taken aback by his tone. He clenched his jaw. “I’m sorry. I’m just tired from driving.”

“That’s okay. Do you want me to take over?”

He shook his head. “We’re almost there.” Indeed, they passed a road sign reading five miles to Brighton.

He was five miles from the place where his world had disintegrated. Where his soul had died by the side of the road. Crushed by metal. Turned to ash.

He never wanted to see this fucking place again.

Unfortunately, he did want to see his parents. So, twice a year, he made a perfunctory trek to their cottage. He never stayed overnight. And he certainly never took a woman.

His stomach roiled. How would he pull this off without becoming a pathetic sad sack curled on his parents’ floor?

Once again, he fought to keep it together around Dawn. Once again. Once again.

How many times could he do this before he broke down in front of her? They were growing closer and closer every day. His feelings for her grew no matter how hard he forced them down, his heart pulling him toward her without consent from his head. A light flickered deep within him, a light he’d thought had been destroyed—snuffed out—on that road in Brighton. On that horrible day.

But…fuck. He did have feelings for Dawn. Feelings he couldn’t control. Feelings that were utterly misplaced, wasted, and useless. They had no future together. What the hell was he thinking?

The hairs on his arms stood on end as he turned down the road leading to his parents’ home.

“Almost there,” he managed to say. Dawn didn’t respond. Could she tell something was off with him?

Of course she can, you wanker. You’ve barely said five words to her in the past hour.

“Get it together,” Callan muttered.

“What did you say?”

“I said, ah, this road is better.” He cleared his throat. “This road, I like it better. The trees…and such.”

“Why are you being so weird?” she asked with a frown.

“I just…I don’t want my mum to harass you.”

Dawn folded her arms. “Harass how? She’s nice.”

He rolled down his window and inhaled the salty air. “She’s a chatterbox, is all. But I know you can handle yourself.” He forced a smile. “Feel free to change the subject if she gets too personal.
