When a kindergarten student is below benchmark on one of the phonemic awareness CBM indicators (e.g., phoneme isolation and phoneme segmentation), the next step is to administer a phonological awareness (PA) diagnostic screener. Several different PA diagnostic screeners are available. These diagnostic assessments are not normed or standardized because their purpose is to inform instruction. They also are not timed because they measure accuracy and not fluency; the CBM measures fluency, so they are all timed assessments.
