Friday, July 3rd

117 days

I was in my office, knee-deep into drafting questions for my trial next week, when my office phone blinked and buzzed. I’d planned on scooting out early. It was Friday and Roland had planned to stay the weekend. I had a pot roast in the slow cooker, and I needed to grab a nice Merlot from the store. I hadn’t kept any alcohol in the house once I discovered Jeanie’s abuse.

“Maya,” Katy called, her voice unnervingly sweet. So sweet I paused mid-type.

“Yes?” I answered, staring at the phone.

“Meeting with the partners in ten.”

“What?”

“Meeting with the partners in ten minutes. Conference room.”

“Okay.” My heartbeat rattled my chest. I was so tempted to text Roland, my fingers tingled.

When we first began our affair, we both agreed that I wouldn’t ask him about the partners, even when I decided to go for partner. It wouldn’t be fair to him. Besides that, I didn’t want him to feel like I was using him for information. I wanted to earn it all on my own.

Instead of giving in to temptation, I opened my compact mirror to check my appearance. I reapplied my coral lipstick and readied myself for the news.

An army of dragonflies attacked my stomach. I pressed a hand against my abdomen. “I can do this.” I strode to the conference room, passing by a smiling Katy with David all in her face.

“Hey, there, Maya.” David smiled. He looked down at Katy. They shared a cheesy grin. I rolled my eyes. Apparently, love was in the air.

Love? I tripped, righting myself on the wall. You don’t love him.

I shook my head as I turned the corner. I saw the him in question, along with Marc Sanders and Fred Dickerson.

“Maya, please, take a seat.” Marc and Roland stood when I entered the room. The other partner, Fred, remained seated.

“Water?” Marc offered.

“No, thank you.” I shook my head and settled in the chair across from the attorneys.

“So . . .” Marc thumped the oak table with his fingers. “We’ve come to a decision for our next partner, and we have decided to go with David.”

I squared my shoulders, determined not to show the impact of the news. I took a deep breath.

“Please know that you’re a valuable asset to our team . . .” Marc continued talking. I looked up but not at him. My eyes found Roland. Cool hand Luke had been calm, hands clasped in front of him; even his eyes were blank. I stared at him a little longer. His breathing pattern changed, and something flashed in his eyes—a little give to the steel he displayed.

“Marc,” I interrupted, “can you tell me what . . . what I’ve done to miss this opportunity?”

Marc shook his head. “You’re a great attorney, passionate and talented. We just decided that David’s a better fit for partner.”

“If you don’t mind, I’d like to hear feedback from everyone. This is the only way I can improve.”

“Fine,” Marc sighed. “You seem a bit . . . preoccupied.
