Worshippers on the rocky islet where the temple is located sometimes have to wait for the tide to recede before they can walk back to the shore.
One of the most sacred temples for Balinese and also most often photographed by tourists , Tanah Lot clings to an outcrop of rocks along the roaring coastline of the Indian Ocean.
Nusa Dua is a gated compound of resorts with features unheard of elsewhere in southern Bali: broad footpaths, negligible traffic and zero hawkers. All the beaches are superb and accessible from the promenade that stretches 7 km north to Tanjung Benoa. Nusa Dua, which means ‘two islands’, lends its name to the twin headlands shaped like islands and topped with temples. Another attraction, besides golfing and shopping, is the splendid Museum Pasifika with its extensive collection of works from across the Asia-Pacific region.
Tanjung Benoa is positioned along the extended ‘thumb’ of Bukit Peninsula. Foreigners rarely venture to the likable village at the tip that boasts an admirably harmonious cluster with a Chinese temple, mosque and Hindu temple. Some of the beach is molded with breakwaters that create protected curves of white sand, so swimming is wonderful and every conceivable water sport is available.
The peninsula’s coast is peppered with luxurious villa complexes and divine cliffside surfing beaches, such as Padang-Padang, which are mostly accessible by steep steps along isolated roads. At the far southwestern edge, poised above the Indian Ocean, is Pura Luhur Ulu Watu, a highly revered clifftop temple. The only attraction in the scrubby interior is the massive Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park.
