Chapter 14

Piper

I threw myself down on the king-sized bed in my hotel room and held my phone to my ear as it started to ring. Janie picked up on the third ring, and her voice was filled with excitement. “Hey!”

“Hi,” I said, grinning from ear to ear at hearing my best friend’s voice on the other end. “How are you?”

“I’m great now that I’m talking to you. Where are you? How are things going? What have you been doing? Tell me everything.”

I laughed and shook my head as I looked up at the ceiling. “I don’t even know where to begin.”

“Well, let’s start simple. What are you doing right now?”

I looked around my hotel room at the Frontenac. “I’m laying on my bed in the middle of the afternoon, talking to you. I’m wearing a fancy hotel robe, and I spent the whole morning reading and eating fruit.”

“That sounds magical.”

“It’s pretty great,” I confessed.

“How is the hotel?”

“You should Google it. It is seriously the most amazing place I’ve ever set foot in. It’s called Le Château de Frontenac.”

“Oh my, is Joshua turning you French already? Your accent was on point!”

I laughed and rolled my eyes. “No. It’s just fun to say.”

I heard Janie moving around through the line. A cupboard closed, and then water was running and filling something up. I imagined she was standing in our kitchen, getting ready to boil a pot of tea. She had weekends off, and she liked to have leisurely mornings on Saturdays. “So?” Janie prompted.

“So?”

“So how are things going with you and the Canadian?”

I fiddled with the waistband of my robe. “Erm. A lot better than I thought they would. Or could. He’s really great, Janie. Like really great.”

Janie giggled, and I heard the gas element on the stove clicking as she turned it on. My guess about her making tea had been spot on. “I knew you would like him. He’s a sweetheart. And a hell of a good-looking one at that. What have you guys been doing? What sorts of dates has he taken you on?”

“Well, we went for a really nice dinner on my first night. And then he let me have the whole first day to myself. Which was weird. Because you know me, I’m always out and about doing something or I’m at the restaurant. Being alone for a whole day with nobody counting on me was strange. But I loved every second of it.”

“Wow. That was nice of him.”

“I know, right? And then we went to his art studio. He’s crazy talented, Janie. I couldn’t believe it. His paintings are so lifelike, it’s like I was looking at a photograph. We went to a Winter Fair in the city walls and to another dinner. He had a private brunch in a grand hall of the hotel set out for me the other week. Then we took a helicopter down to Niagara Falls. It was beautiful. And he had a hotel room for us in downtown Toronto at the Ritz-Carlton.
