Chapter 14
Piper
I threw myself down on the king-sized bed in my hotel room and held my phone to my ear as it started to ring. Janie picked up on the third ring, and her voice was filled with excitement. âHey!â
âHi,â I said, grinning from ear to ear at hearing my best friendâs voice on the other end. âHow are you?â
âIâm great now that Iâm talking to you. Where are you? How are things going? What have you been doing? Tell me everything.â
I laughed and shook my head as I looked up at the ceiling. âI donât even know where to begin.â
âWell, letâs start simple. What are you doing right now?â
I looked around my hotel room at the Frontenac. âIâm laying on my bed in the middle of the afternoon, talking to you. Iâm wearing a fancy hotel robe, and I spent the whole morning reading and eating fruit.â
âThat sounds magical.â
âItâs pretty great,â I confessed.
âHow is the hotel?â
âYou should Google it. It is seriously the most amazing place Iâve ever set foot in. Itâs called Le Château de Frontenac.â
âOh my, is Joshua turning you French already? Your accent was on point!â
I laughed and rolled my eyes. âNo. Itâs just fun to say.â
I heard Janie moving around through the line. A cupboard closed, and then water was running and filling something up. I imagined she was standing in our kitchen, getting ready to boil a pot of tea. She had weekends off, and she liked to have leisurely mornings on Saturdays. âSo?â Janie prompted.
âSo?â
âSo how are things going with you and the Canadian?â
I fiddled with the waistband of my robe. âErm. A lot better than I thought they would. Or could. Heâs really great, Janie. Like really great.â
Janie giggled, and I heard the gas element on the stove clicking as she turned it on. My guess about her making tea had been spot on. âI knew you would like him. Heâs a sweetheart. And a hell of a good-looking one at that. What have you guys been doing? What sorts of dates has he taken you on?â
âWell, we went for a really nice dinner on my first night. And then he let me have the whole first day to myself. Which was weird. Because you know me, Iâm always out and about doing something or Iâm at the restaurant. Being alone for a whole day with nobody counting on me was strange. But I loved every second of it.â
âWow. That was nice of him.â
âI know, right? And then we went to his art studio. Heâs crazy talented, Janie. I couldnât believe it. His paintings are so lifelike, itâs like I was looking at a photograph. We went to a Winter Fair in the city walls and to another dinner. He had a private brunch in a grand hall of the hotel set out for me the other week. Then we took a helicopter down to Niagara Falls. It was beautiful. And he had a hotel room for us in downtown Toronto at the Ritz-Carlton.
