As we have already mentioned before in this biography, at the start of the decade the world of dance did not cease to grow in importance within the cultural world in this country. The Dance Notation Bureau was created in May which was an office and school that recorded the dance following of Rudolf von Laban´s method. It all started in 1937 with the first visit of two experts on Labanotation who were Irma Otte-Betz and Irmgaard Bartenieff. The four pioneers and founders of the new office were Eve Gentry, Helen Priest Rogers, the writer, Ann Hutchinson teacher and adviser and Janey Price who was sponsored by Hanya Holm and the dance critic John Martin, the most influential dance critic for over two decades. It could be due to the contact with Hanya that Irmgaard Bartenieff went to train with Joe seeing as we find her on the customer register of the year 1962. Bartenieff, who was of German origin, had studied for many years with Laban and after coming to live in America developed her own method of therapeutic dance associated with the Laban method, a person with a very interesting curriculum.
Another example of this unequaled momentum in dance in the city of New York is the creation in 1940 of the Ballet Theatre Company, known from 1956 as the American Ballet Theatre. It was a continuation of the existing Mordkin Ballet that was formed in 1937 and in the autumn of 1939 was reorganized with an extension of the staff of dancers and with the two new directors, Lucia Chase and Richard Pleasant. This is the dance group that would occupy the place left by Balanchine at the Metropolitan Opera.
The sculptor John R. Terken (1912 - 1993) came to Joe Pilates to help him overcome the prerequisites for entering the military corps of the U.S. Air Force. It describes the situation before resorting to the help of Joe : “curved spine and nervous condition ... doctors (predicted) semi invalidity forever ... Contrology exercises have changed my mental and physical condition (for this) I was accepted in the USAF ... flying regularly to great heights ... owing everything to Joseph Pilates “.
Terken was a native of Rochester, son of Belgian immigrants. After completing his studies in fine arts at various institutions in the United States and Europe, he travelled regularly to France from late -twenties to mid -thirties. He then worked in various places as an advertising manager at the National Sculpture Review, and on the Council of Education Services in the district of Long Island, where he lived as from the mid- thirties, besides being a Delegate for the Fine Arts Federation in New York.
In appreciation, the sculptor -friend -customer of Joe sculpted a bust in 1940, which Joe, very proudly exhibited in their study on a pedestal. The small plaque beneath the Joe´s bust reads : “Joseph H. Pilates. Founder of the Science of Contrology at the age of 60 “(Joseph H. Pilates ).
