“I don’t know Carl; I don’t think I can keep Kay from going over there tonight.” Jasper kidded which earned him a playful yet stern glare from Kay. “How about early, say 7:30?” Ok, works for us.” Carl said for them both. “How about you guys?” Carl asked Emily. “Sounds fine. We’ll be there.” Emily said unenthusiastically.

Hugs were shared all around with Emily getting a few confidential words whispered from Carl. “You tell that brother of mine to snap out it and get himself right. Temper tantrums are for boys not grown men. We are family here and we’re not about to see any of us living in a shed behind Earl’s place. We’ll take care of each other. Nobody’s getting carried by pity. It’s going to take work.” He gave her another big bear hug and said in a normal voice, “You’re his grounding rod, Em. I love you guys.”

Bloom never heard anyone she knew say ‘I love you’ before, just like that. He didn’t whisper it in her ear or try to be quiet about it. Kay and Jasper heard it too. Nobody seemed to think it was any big deal.

Sunday, October 19th, 2014 Svet Place Tour

Bloom and Perky pulled into the driveway of the Svet place. The grasses in the neglected dirt driveway were now tall, brown, and spindly. Perky jumped out as soon as Bloom allowed, sniffing everything nearby. Bloom stood next to her truck and stretched. The house was in good shape from what she could see from here. Two stories tall and rectangular, there were no bonus points awarded for architectural ingenuity with this house. A porch stretched around the front and along the two short sides with a wide staircase leading to the prominent double door entryway with glass side windows stretching from the floor to the top of the towering doors. The lower level windows were the original article; nobody put those tall narrow windows in new homes. Bloom nodded with satisfaction. The upstairs windows looked to be newer, at least from the front.

All the buildings had green metal roofs. The white painted structures with just a few green accents maintained the original dignity. She had to admit that it was a handsome farmstead. Behind the main house were several out buildings, all in good repair. From her truck, she could see two barns, one much larger than the other, both with stone foundations that reached five or more feet high into the wall. What looked like a smokehouse, and a couple of sheds came into view as she moved around to the front of her truck. Her forest butted the south side of the property with a fence separating the two. Great place, if the inside was even half as good as the outside.

As Bloom and Perky were eyeing the homestead from near the truck, Kay and Jasper arrived followed closely by Emily and Walt. Kay was so excited she started tiptoe jogging to the front door immediately. Her spiked heels would sink if she put any weight on them.
