Both the Old and New Testaments speak of our God competing in the hearts of people with other gods and other lords. Joshua confronted this problem directly with his people as they conquered the Promised Land. He plainly said, âBut if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lordâ (Josh. 24:15).
This reminds us again that religious pluralism dates back to our earliest recorded history. Other gods during the Old Testament period included Baal, Asherah, Chemosh, Dagon, and Molech. Other gods during the New Testament period included Zeus, Isis, Adonis, Demeter, Caesar, and Diana. The lordship of Christ in the early church meant early Christians purposefully chose to identify themselves with Jesus Christ rather than one of the gods of other religions.
When we contemplate the meaning of Christâs lordship in the twenty-first century, we usually do not think of having to steer away from other world religions. Probably few, if any, of us have given serious consideration to worshipping Allah, practicing Buddhist meditations, or applying Hindu principles to daily living.
But we do hear the tempting voices of different kinds of gods. These voices usurp the lordship of Christ and sneak in among us in subtle ways. As you read the sections of this chapter, think about ways these lords call for your attention. Perhaps these particular voices may not call to you; other voices, just as subtle, just as tempting, however, do call your name. So be on guard. Remember the warning of the prophet Jeremiah: âDo people make their own gods? Yes, but they are not gods!â (Jer. 16:20).
