At the surface of Bentham's writings on religion there may be particular passages to cling to, supporting Crimmin's interpretation, but a careful reading, in view of the force of Bentham's other works, should reveal, as with Shakespeare's works, intricate 'sub-plots', importing other criticisms and agendas Bentham has, illustrations of which are provided in the earlier discussion.

Bentham's concern was not with the abolition of religion, but instead with segregating the use and funding of it from the public sphere to the private, minimising in the process the sinister interests of state, priests25 and all those deriving such benefits from it in the public sphere. The aim was to place religion in the private sphere, to be funded by individuals - not the state - and to be partitioned from government decision-making. This corresponds with his empiricism, abolition of useless fictions26 sinister interests, and the implementation of representative government27 and not his alleged atheism.
