A solid half hour later we come upon a little house on top of a nearby mountain.

“Let’s stop here for a minute,” Bryson says, moving his bike toward the front door.

“Somebody lives here,” I say quietly in protest, extending my hand toward the door. “Let’s get out of here.”

“Bryson,” a voice says, and the door opens and an older woman comes out, giving him a hug.

“Well, well, well. I always said one day you’d introduce me to a young lady.”

“And I told you it would never happen,” he says, moving toward me.

They know each other.

“You owe me a hundred bucks, sucka,” she says, and I can’t help but laugh.

“Hi. I’m Emma. Bryson’s friend.”

“She’s like a mother to me,” Bryson says.

“Nah,” she dismisses with a wave of her hand. “You don’t need a mother or anything of the sort. You’ve got it all figured out, and it looks like you’ve really saved your best decision for now.”

She surveys me with a smile and gives me a hug. Realizing I don’t know much about Bryson, I can figure out from the words and everything that’s going on that this is a big moment for him. He’s introducing me to the woman who’s his stand-in mother, which makes sense based on his comment about growing up in an orphanage yesterday.

“Come in for some soup?” she invites.

Bryson nods and looks at me.

“I’d love to.”

“Great. And when you’re done we can saddle up Bessie and Sam and you two can do some riding.”

Bessie and Sam. “You have horses?” I ask, my voice rising as the words fly out of my mouth.

“For Bryson, and whoever he brings up here, we have anything they want.”

“How many people has Bryson brought up here?” I ask without thinking. Bryson’s eyes open wide as he gives me a ‘really?’ look.

“We’ve known him…twenty years now,” she says, confirming with a look in his direction. “And you’re the first.”
