This low boat shelter near Naka-no-shima Island is made in the traditional manner from thatch and bamboo, materials that perfectly complement the garden environment.

The Yatsuhashi Bridge, with irises growing nearby, is a common theme in stroll gardens, and is a reference to the azumakudari chapter of an ancient narrative called the “Tale of Ise.”

Lawns have been popular features of Japanese gardens since the Edo period, but rarely on the scale seen here. Viewing the grassy expanses at Koraku-en as the garden’s main feature may be counter-productive, however, inviting comparisons with the manicured perfection of gardens in England and France. Here it is better to stress the indigenous garden features, of which there are an abundance. Today, the garden serves as an events space, doubling for festivals, community activities and cultural performances, a multipurpose function that exploits the spatial possibilities of this large tract of land.

Though much of the landscape had to be rebuilt after severe damage in World War II, its scale and proportions remain remarkably faithful to the original feudal garden, which has been purportedly restored on the basis of paintings and diagrams owned by the Ikeda family.
