BIRDS AND FLOWERS IN THE FOUR SEASONS

Artist Unknown, early Momoyama period (ca. 15 75)

Left screen of a pair

This screen by an unknown artist clearly reveals several of the influences apparent in the Momoyama screen. The subject of birds and flowers itself is inherited from Chinese masters. The brilliant colors, however, are reminiscent of the earlier Yamato-e scrolls and manuscripts. One parr of the design, the waterfall, is quite Chinese, whereas the pattern as a whole, which contrasts the pine and its needles in the background with the rocks and water in the foreground, could only be Japanese. The rocks, quite apart from the role they play in the composition here, have many Chinese predecessors, bur the light wash in gold patterns is uniquely Japanese and affords an astonishing amount of depth. All of these elements combine to create the unusual effect of gorgeous color and composed dramatic line that typifies a Momoyama screen painting.
