Chapter Eighteen

Tractor Town

Anna had elected to put her projection away, but promised if there was a good reason for making a general communication she’d pop back in.

Olive and I saddled up Threepio and headed out of town for the farm supply dealer. Pine Canyon Implements was a pretty big place, and it looked prosperous. We drove around the perimeter, looking at the toys in the lot. Now, I suppose that for most people, they were either big undecipherable machines, big lumps of metal, or big devices to do a job. For me, though, it was a joy to look at them. I’ve always loved big machines, and watching one of these huge combines trundling along a road makes my heart sing.

I know, I’m silly. So sue me.

One thing I did notice, though, when the detective looked through the fangirl eyes, was that they seemed to have a lot of stock, and most of it was new. There was very little old junk on the entire property. I’d not have thought a town the size of Pine Canyon could have supported a dealership of this size.

“Olive, what do you think? What kind of money is tied up here?”

She pulled in a breath and whistled it out. “Lots. Millions, most likely. Your mister Livingston either had a lot of money, or he has a lot of debt.” She looked around at the sheer spectacle of the array of farm equipment again. “Or both.”

“He’s not my mister Livingston, but I agree.”

Olive looked at me funny when I said that, but I didn’t ask her why. “Let’s go inside and see if Kit’s here. I’d like to look at those tires.”

The front of the building was an expansive wall of glass, stretching the entire length of the customer parking area. In keeping with the heroic size of the machinery being sold, it was a very tall wall of glass as well, and had one of the apparently latest combines inside. It was impressive from outside and when we went inside through the double doors, it was all the more impressive. The huge front tires alone were at least six feet tall. By contrast the back ones were nearly tiny, although in perspective they were still the size of ordinary car tires.

Olive being Olive, she climbed up into the cab right off the bat. WIth the door closed and the window down, she… still didn’t look like a farmer. But she was very cute and would likely sell combines if they took pictures of her sitting there, smiling away, all the bright of the sunshine right there in her eyes.

A voice at my elbow said, “Good afternoon, Ms. Bond.”

I turned and smiled. “Hello, Kit.”

“What brings you to my neck of the words?”

He had a smile on his face and it almost reached his eyes.

“Oh, just looking around. I love this machinery and wanted to get a good look. And we need to see the tires with the punctures in them.”

The smile went away completely, and he said, “Of course.
