Back in her cubicle, Jane put her head down on her desk, grateful for the cool and the quiet.

“Jane! I need you to scan and copy these . . .” Mr. Rosen rounded the corner, a sheaf of documents in his hand, and came up short. “Jane, are you all right?”

She was in love with him, no denying it to herself. What an awful, stupid thing to do. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. She wanted to cry.

“I’m okay, just a bit of a headache.” She pulled herself into an upright position and put on her best polite, professional smile, the one she wore every day when she was a waitress.

“Are you sure? You look a bit wobbly.” He moved forward and gently laid a hand on her shoulder. “If you need to go home . . .”

“No. I’ve taken an aspirin. I’ll be fine.” She craved his touch but refused to be moved by it. “I’ll take those documents and get them right back to you.”

He handed them over, but his dark eyes stayed on her, serious with worry.

“I’m fine, Mr. Rosen.”

Just do the job you were hired to do.
