Chapter Sixteen
Choteau, Montana (past)
Itâs nice to be back home! This is my second night in the little bungalow and I already love it. It reminds me in some ways of my place at home, only in much better condition. Kit is distracted by his new toy, and I have a date with Dale tonight that Iâm not completely looking forward to. Thereâs something thatâs worrying him, and now itâs worrying me too.
We met at John Henryâs, downtown. Itâs a nice place, some would say itâs a bit too touristy, but some people would say that a gumdrop in the road is too touristy, so letâs not put too fine a point on it. We both sat at about the same time, made the same non-committal comments and definitely didnât kiss or even shake hands. There was something in the air and it wasnât only barbeque ribs.
We ordered, we looked at the ceiling, the walls, the floor. Finally, at the food. We ate our meal in tense silence. I put down my fork and looked at Dale.
âSo, what is it, Dale?â
He sighed. âWhere were you the last couple days, Jane?â
I looked at him. âI was down around the Hamilton area, you know that. I even texted you from there.â
âYou got stopped by a cop along the highway nowhere near Hamilton, and then you vanished. We didnât see you for almost an entire day, until you DID appear in Hamilton.â
I raised my eyebrows. âYouâve ... been following me? Dale, this is getting a little creepy. Weâve only been dating a few weeks at most.â
He replied, âOh come off it, Jane. You know itâs not anything creepy. Iâm a sworn officer of the law. I need to know where youâve been. We know about Morrieâs junk shop and we have witnesses that put you there at least twice. How much stuff have you sold to Morrie?â
My voice raised a bit. âSold to Morrie? Sold what, Dale?â
He mumbled, âRare fossils. Tyrannosaur teeth, probably bones.â
I got a little louder, âTeeth? Bones?? What the hell are you talking about, Dale? You can search my bags, my rooms. I donât have anything like that!â
He studied his fingernails. âWe know. Weâve already searched your room and your bags. Traces of sand and a few flakes of gold, but that means that something was in the bags. What was it, and where did you get it? We canât see you finding that much unless youâre the luckiest woman alive, but it sure seems youâve been finding something.â He sighed again. âAnd Morrie swears you sold him teeth, bones and even parts of a baby, likely from Egg Mountain.â
âYou searched ... my room. My bags.â
He nodded. âWe had a warrant, you werenât available. It was all legal.â
I collapsed into myself. âI thought ... I thought we ... â
He nodded, finally looking shamefaced. âI know. And that was all true, Jane. But Iâm a sworn officer of the law. I have to follow the laws. The rules. No matter what or who it might hurt.
