Chapter Sixteen

Choteau, Montana (past)

It’s nice to be back home! This is my second night in the little bungalow and I already love it. It reminds me in some ways of my place at home, only in much better condition. Kit is distracted by his new toy, and I have a date with Dale tonight that I’m not completely looking forward to. There’s something that’s worrying him, and now it’s worrying me too.

We met at John Henry’s, downtown. It’s a nice place, some would say it’s a bit too touristy, but some people would say that a gumdrop in the road is too touristy, so let’s not put too fine a point on it. We both sat at about the same time, made the same non-committal comments and definitely didn’t kiss or even shake hands. There was something in the air and it wasn’t only barbeque ribs.

We ordered, we looked at the ceiling, the walls, the floor. Finally, at the food. We ate our meal in tense silence. I put down my fork and looked at Dale.

“So, what is it, Dale?”

He sighed. “Where were you the last couple days, Jane?”

I looked at him. “I was down around the Hamilton area, you know that. I even texted you from there.”

“You got stopped by a cop along the highway nowhere near Hamilton, and then you vanished. We didn’t see you for almost an entire day, until you DID appear in Hamilton.”

I raised my eyebrows. “You’ve ... been following me? Dale, this is getting a little creepy. We’ve only been dating a few weeks at most.”

He replied, “Oh come off it, Jane. You know it’s not anything creepy. I’m a sworn officer of the law. I need to know where you’ve been. We know about Morrie’s junk shop and we have witnesses that put you there at least twice. How much stuff have you sold to Morrie?”

My voice raised a bit. “Sold to Morrie? Sold what, Dale?”

He mumbled, “Rare fossils. Tyrannosaur teeth, probably bones.”

I got a little louder, “Teeth? Bones?? What the hell are you talking about, Dale? You can search my bags, my rooms. I don’t have anything like that!”

He studied his fingernails. “We know. We’ve already searched your room and your bags. Traces of sand and a few flakes of gold, but that means that something was in the bags. What was it, and where did you get it? We can’t see you finding that much unless you’re the luckiest woman alive, but it sure seems you’ve been finding something.” He sighed again. “And Morrie swears you sold him teeth, bones and even parts of a baby, likely from Egg Mountain.”

“You searched ... my room. My bags.”

He nodded. “We had a warrant, you weren’t available. It was all legal.”

I collapsed into myself. “I thought ... I thought we ... “

He nodded, finally looking shamefaced. “I know. And that was all true, Jane. But I’m a sworn officer of the law. I have to follow the laws. The rules. No matter what or who it might hurt.
