Chapter 13

Since there wasn’t much to do in Red Maple Falls, Jax defaulted to the classic dinner and a movie date. It wasn’t too creative, but he didn’t think Kristen was the type of girl who cared about all the bells and whistles. It was one of the things he found intriguing about her. She was okay with a slice of pizza and a glass of wine at home. Not to mention, he expected the kids to be tagging along. When Kristen opened the door and he recovered from the pure beauty in front of him, he was amazed at the pure silence that accompanied her.

“Where are the boys tonight?” he asked as he drove Chases’ truck toward the theater. Chase was at work and didn’t need his vehicle until morning. Jax really needed to buy something. He didn’t like borrowing or asking for favors, but he couldn’t pass up his chance to take Kristen out.

“The boys are at my friend Sarah’s house. She’s married to Cooper Hayes. Do you know the Hayes family?”

“Everyone in Red Maple Falls knows the Hayes family.” Growing up, he’d been jealous at their seemingly perfect life, living in the house on top of the hill with both their parents. He’d never admit it, but as a kid, he’d sometimes imagine what his life would be like if he was born a Hayes instead of a Marshall.

“That’s true, but you’ve been gone awhile, so I wasn’t sure.” Kristen rubbed her arms, and Jax immediately reached for the heat control.

“Cold?” he asked.

“A little. I should’ve worn a jacket.”

Jax reached into the backseat of the truck, grabbed the jacket he’d tossed back there, and handed it to her. “You can use mine.”

“Thanks.” She draped it over her legs and rested her hands beneath it.

“Better?” he asked.

“Much.” She met his eyes, and her sweetness sucker punched him in the gut. She was so damn beautiful; it nearly took his breath away. He regained his composure and focused his eyes back on the road. He’d lost his mother in a car accident, and he would never put Kristen in the path of that fate.

There was an awkward silence that passed between them, and he hated it. “I’m nervous,” he admitted.

“Oh, thank god. Me too.”

“It’s crazy,” he said. “I would walk into a situation blindly, knowing at any second my life would be over, and I was never nervous.”

She shifted in her seat to face him. The scent of strawberries drifted toward him, and he inhaled deeply.

“What is it that you’re nervous about?” she asked.

He glanced at her, catching her eyes for a moment. “I don’t want to mess this up, and I’m afraid I’m going to say or do the wrong thing.”

“Let’s make a deal right now,” she said. “Let’s not be nervous. Even though we haven’t known each other long, I already know there’s nothing you can say or do that will frighten me off. Besides, I think we’ve both seen each other at our worst. It can only get better from here.
