Georgie summed up Jake’s activities in a letter to Kitts: “Jamie seems to be busier in Algiers than he was in England. He has been at Cassino lying in a ditch, under shell fire, and at the landing at Nettuno—looking over the German gun batteries from an unarmored observation plane on the beach head.”14 Georgie was right about her husband being far busier in the MTO than he had been in the ETO. One of his major challenges for the next six months would be to ensure that the invasion of southern France was well planned and executed. This endeavor would bring him into direct conflict with senior British leaders and into intimate contact with the French forces then fighting in Italy and training in North Africa.
