“She must have studied terribly carefully. Every dress she wears becomes a marvelous spot of color, like the bright spot that holds your eye in Persian miniatures. The pale apricot silk she wore for the boat ride on Pichola Lake was wonderful against these pink-tinged castles in the water,” an admiring journalist told Jackie’s friend Joan Braden for the Saturday Evening Post.

Jackie and Lee enjoyed, if that’s the right word, a ride on an elephant (as Lee told Barbara Walters, who, as a young reporter, accompanied the First Lady and her sister to India, “You don’t feel very graceful on top of an elephant!”).

On the flight home, Jackie shared some of her traveling beauty secrets with friend and reporter Joan Braden: “For months before we left [her maid] Provi learned from Jean Louis every Friday how to set hair. Lots of times on the trip, instead of taking a nap, I washed my hair and Provi put in the rollers. I can’t do that but I’m pretty good at combing. I did think of taking a wig but I couldn’t find one that looked natural. The one night I did try one, when I walked into the room Jack said, ‘My God, what have you done to yourself?’”
