Chapter 7

Theodore

“I thought you were banned from the premises,” Pierre said, who had seemingly been lurking around the entrance of the Gendarmerie brigade in wait for her.

“Legally, you can’t actually ban me from the only center of law enforcement in Gordes,” Cosette pointed out.

“What if I took out a restraining order against you?” Pierre countered with a smirk.

“Excellent idea,” Cosette said with a grin. “That way, when I get to a crime scene first, you won’t be allowed to enter.”

“It doesn’t work that way! I should arrest you for your contempt,” he snarled, his fragile temper already fraying at the edges.

“Monsieur Pierre, you spend so much time threatening to arrest me that you don’t get around to arresting the real criminals,” she retorted.

Pierre’s sallow cheeks were tinged with pink.

“Let’s all calm down,” Levi interrupted their squabble. “Cosette was Daisy Poverly’s telephone call.”

“She should’ve done the sensible thing and called a lawyer,” Pierre snapped.

“Her choice,” Cosette said with a shrug. “I brought her a change of clothes and a toothbrush. For what it’s worth, I don’t think you’ve cracked this.”

Pierre looked as though he was ready to explode.

“I’ll deal with Madame Cavalier’s concerns,” Levi said hastily, while tugging her away by the elbow. “You shouldn’t exasperate Hank like that,” Levi scolded once they were out of earshot.

“Why not? It’s fun.”

“It makes my job harder,” Levi explained with a glum expression.

Cosette could tell some of his exuberance and zeal from the day before had already been crushed by an overbearing boss.

“I’m sorry,” she apologized quickly. “Hank and I have been at war so long, I don’t know how to be amicable anymore.”

“What happened between the two of you?”

Cosette glanced round to make sure none of the other gendarmes were listening in.

“I accused him of fixing cases. I believed he gave criminals tip offs, so that by the time the police arrived to arrest them, the evidence and or the criminal was long gone,” Cosette explained in a low voice. “The cop I convinced to go after him lost the case, and his job as a result.”

Levi’s dark eyebrows had practically disappeared into his hairline.

“That was you?”

“Yeah,” Cosette said with a sigh. “It’s why everyone hates me around here.”

“They do hate you. They use your silhouette as targets at the shooting range. But, outside of Gordes, you’re a hero. I mean, you caught a serial killer!”

Cosette hid her amusement.

“Where’s Daisy? I need to see her,” Cosette said, bringing him back to the present. “I’m the reason her prints were on that bottle.”

“Her prints weren’t the only prints we found at the scene,” Levi whispered.

“Explain.”

“We found Alondra Delgado’s prints on the whiskey glass,” Levi explained. “We know they’re hers because she’s in the system for petty theft from stores she’s worked at.”

“Alondra wasn’t their waitress. My informant, Claire, was,” Cosette explained.

“Yes, there was a second set of prints which match Claire’s. She volunteered her prints. And the third set obviously belonged to Duke’s.”

“So, nothing from Daisy,” Cosette realized.

“No, hers were the only prints on the perfume bottle of cyanide,” Levi reminded her.
